Azura, Gulliver, St. Andrew’s Swimmers Dominate Opening Day Of Gulliver Long Course Senior Invitational

January 10, 2015—If Day One of the Gulliver Long Course Senior Invitational is any indication, it’s going to be a very competitive long course season in the Florida Gold Coast.
On a chilly, windswept day at Gulliver Prep’s Marian Krutulis Aquatic Facility in Miami, Azura Florida Aquatics, St. Andrew’s Swimming and host Gulliver Swimming dominated the first two sessions of the two-day meet.
University of Virginia-bound Megan Moroney, 17, of St. Andrew’s Swimming won all four events she was seeded first in. Moroney won the 400-meter freestyle in 4:33.25; 100-meter backstroke in 1:07.59, 100-meter butterfly in 1:04.78 and 200-meter freestyle in 2:08.89.
St. Andrew’s Swimming teammate Rachael Bradford-Feldman, 17, was a double winner, capturing the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:47.83 and 400-meter individual medley in 5:08.15.
Gulliver Swimming had two individual champions. Alicia Mancilla, 15, won the 200-meter butterfly in 2:27.94 and Andrea Santander, 13, won the 50-meter freestyle in 28.15.
Lisa Margaret Blackburn of South Florida Aquatic Club and Bermuda national record holder did well in her meet debut representing SOFLO.
At 43, the oldest swimmer in the field won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:18.46; was second in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:54.71 and fifth in the 50-meter freestyle in 28.93.
In the men’s events, Azura Florida Aquatics flexed its muscles in nearly event, sweeping the top three spots in four events. Azura swept the 200-meter breaststroke, 100-meter breaststroke, 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly.
Azura won seven of nine individual events with Gulliver winning the other two.
Mateo Gonzalez, 18, was a double winner in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:00.29 and 100-meter butterfly in 56.89 and Franco Lupoli, 20, was also a double winner in the 400-meter freestyle in 4:03.89 and 200-meter freestyle in a best time 1:55.63.
Individual Azura winners were Elias Mehrdad, 22, Marco Guarente, 17, and Adan Diaz, 16. Nicholas Nord, 20, and Miguel Cancel, 15, were Gulliver’s individual winners. Cancel won the 400-meter individual medley in a best time 4:49.49, shaving 10.51 minutes off his previous best.
The timed final meet concludes on Sunday with one session beginning at 10 a.m. There are no relays and the meet is not being scored.
